Splenic Sequestration of Red Blood Cells: A Computerized Approach Using Two Radionuclides

چکیده
The current method for measurement of red blood cell sequestration by the spleen is subject to many inaccuracies. Because of the poor imaging properties of Cr, the exact size and location of the areas of interest, the spleen, liver, and precordium, cannot be identified. Similarly, total organ information cannot be obtained using the currently used scintillation probe because of its limited crystal size. We have developed a simple, rapid, and accurate method which overcomes these obstacles by utilizing a second radiopharmaceutical, mTc sulfur colloid for organ/site localization and the use of a dedicated clinical camera/computer system for data collection and analysis from regions of interest.

Determination of hemolytic anemia through the study of (51)Cr red cell survival and splenic sequestration.
The use of (51)Cr-labeled red blood cells to determine erythrocyte survival in circulation is not a routine procedure. Data are acquired by frequent counting of small-volume blood samples to determine the rate of red cell survival over time. Results are entirely quantitative and can involve semilogarithmic graphing techniques. An accurate study can positively identify hemolytic anemia, a disord...
متن کاملAcute splenic sequestration in a pregnant woman with homozygous sickle-cell anemia.
CONTEXT Homozygous (SS) sickle-cell anemia complicated by acute splenic sequestration in adults is a rare event, and it has never been reported during pregnancy. CASE REPORT A 25-year-old woman with homozygous (SS) sickle-cell disease was hospitalized at 32 weeks' of gestation presenting weakness, abdominal pain, fever and hemoglobin of 2.4 g/dl. Abnormal fetal heart rate was detected by mean...
متن کاملRecurrent acute splenic sequestration crisis due to interacting genetic defects: hemoglobin SC disease and hereditary spherocytosis.
A 14-year-old boy with hemoglobin SC disease and alpha-thalassemia-2 experienced five episodes of acute splenic sequestration crisis (ASSC), while two of his siblings with identical globin genotypes (SC and -alpha/alpha alpha) had no such experience. To determine if an additional red blood cell (RBC) defect was responsible for the unusual occurrence of frequent ASSCs, we performed detailed rheo...
متن کاملInhibition of Red Cell Sequestration by Cortisone
The effect of cortisone on the sequestration of (a) antibody-coated red cells and (b) incubated red cells was studied in rats. Cortisone administration inhibited the hepatic sequestration of red cells altered by non-immune as well as by immune injury. There was a latent period of 2 days between the institution of cortisone therapy and its first manifest effect on hepatic sequestration. The sple...
متن کاملIn vitro and in vivo validation of stored swine erythrocyte viability to establish an experimental model of homologous red blood cell transfusion: a pilot study
OBJECTIVE To develop experimental models of erythrocyte transfusion, the first step is to ensure the viability of the red blood cells transfused. In this pilot study, we assessed the viability of transfused red blood cells with validation in vitro and in vivo of homologous swine erythrocytes stored for 14 days. METHODS Blood collected from one Agroceres swine was stored in two red blood cell ...
